Angola 86 Overview:

This strategy game combines tutorial and full game and includes the entire SA Borders War from 1966 to 1990. The conflict starts when the SADF is deployed to South West Africa which is current day Namibia as a result of rising rebellion.

In your rank as the commander in the SADF you are expected to conduct a counter insurgency (COIN) war in a bid to capture the border region of Angola. You have to gain the sympathy of the locally stationed population by hunting down and neutralizing SWAPO fighters who sneak into the area with the intention of causing havoc through harassment, laying of mines, and laying an ambush for the occupants of that area.

However, the insurgents have the support of the superior force which is the Angolan army (FAPLA) that is supplied by the super power, the Soviet Union. FAPLA seems to have a more ambitious goal than that of SWAPO as its main goal is to conquer the entire region as the outfit works towards flooding Angola with communism. FAPLA also shields SWAPO so that they can conduct operations from there without a hitch, all the while targeting UNITA which enjoys the support of the USA and South Africa.

For you to achieve your mission, you will have to organize and control normal soldiers, commandos, heavy weaponry and aircrafts. The only efficient way to counter the insurgents is through training local forces (SWATF) and questioning the inhabitants of that area. As the population gives you more support you receive more intelligence which is important for counter insurgency operation.

If only the forces of good wore white hats and the evil empire clad in black was easy to defeat on the battles of the trenches, the war isn’t fought in a vacuum. It also important that you should manage political aspects back at home where you serve as the commander of the SADF. This is because, should the public lose support it and the UN decides to withdraw support to your mission, it will evoke failure. The fact of the matter is that this game is a simulation of the South African Border war and the events that took place in that conflict are equally dependent on the actions that you take on the field and in the political theatre.
