The films’ premise is quite simple and is based around a man named Alfred who finds himself in a wheelchair during 1984 who must try and escape a horrific asylum over taken by sound mutants. The only means of locomotion that Alfred has is a squeaky wheelchair and each time he moves the noise becomes more and more alarming that attracts the attention of the bloodthirsty creatures. The longer the player spends within the game, the evader’s life is getting endangered—can Alfred escape the nightmare?

**Before They Wake** is one of the short third-person horror games where players set in the 1980s atmosphere. You must roam the dark and hostile corridors of the asylum with Alfred who has to remain as silent as possible in order not to attract the mutants’ attention. The clock ticks fast with the intensity of moving as fast as one can without creating much noise because the closer one gets the louder these mutant creatures become.

The game is a third-person horror game which is set in a fictional town called St. Anne’s Town of the Gifted. This wheelchair is the only mode of transport and while it may not seem like it comes with its own set of problems it does. The movement is semi-realistic, and the experimentation of the creaking sounds which are produced by this item could probably wake up the mutants.

One of them is the reactive audiometer which tracks the noises that you produce and respond to it. STM bursts attract the mutants’ attention and the louder you get, the more chances you have to get noticed by them. You have to be careful of how you move so that you won’t add to the noise level of the bar.

The game’s aesthetics are based on VHS tapes, which gives the gameplay a somewhat nostalgic and at the same time eerie atmosphere. It is amazing how the opaque, and almost has a vintage feel, which up the ante with each step as you progress in the asylum.
